How the Student Council Works

The current Pechersk School International Student Council has 19 members. Each homeroom elects its representative. The representative then represents the homeroom’s ideas, demands or suggestions. Our student council meetings therefore consist of 2 representatives per grade (1 per homeroom) with the exception of 12th grade, which has 4 representatives. This is due to the fact that our meetings work much better when run by the 12th grade students, which is probably due to the superior amount of experience, education and maturity of the 12th grade students. In addition to the representatives, a teacher supervisor is present at the meetings. The reason for this is the supervision of the meeting and providing help.

There is a hierarchy in our Student Council that we tried to avoid this year by eliminating the post of a president, due to last year’s problems. Instead, we employed the plan of a rotating chairperson. In the beginning of the year, volunteers are elected from 10th through 12th grade, who then lead the meetings of the Student Council. The Chairperson has no particular privileges. This method turned out to work very well.  This is the description of all positions of the Student Council: 14 representatives (2 per grade, 6th grade to 12th grade)

Secretary/ Vice Chairperson

The secretary is usually the next Chairperson. The secretary writes down the minutes, assigns tasks to selected groups of representatives and registers the presence of the representatives.

Treasurer

The treasurer keeps all the Student Council funds in a safe and keeps track of our profits and expenditures.

PR officer/ Attached Newspaper representative

The PR officer and/or the Attached newspaper representative deals with advertising the Student Council and its events. They also run the school newspaper and are a contributor of the Student Council website.

Rotating chairperson

The chairperson runs the meetings. Before each meeting, they send out the agenda that is to be discussed via email. They open and adjourn each meeting, as well as assign goals to the representatives.

  • + 4 voluntary 12th grade students
  • + 1 Teacher supervisor

All of those mentioned above, apart from the teacher supervisor, have the right to vote. Any other students, parents, teachers or administration staff are welcome to attend out meetings and discuss the issues with us, but they do not have the right to vote.

Please notice that the Chairperson is not superior to the other posts. The Chairperson merely directs the meeting and brings up points that are to be discussed.
