Middle Years Programme

At PSI the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five year course of study that starts in Grade 6 and continues through Grade 10. The MYP is an educational framework that requires students to study in eight subjects:

  • literature taught in the student’s native language
  • a foreign language
  • humanities
  • sciences
  • mathematics
  • arts
  • physical education
  • technology

These subjects are taught in each of the five years of the course. In the last two years students may choose electives in the arts. There are also separate classes to reflect different levels of achievement in Mathematics and Foreign languages.

Teachers present their curriculum through units of study based on guiding questions and focused through the Areas of Interaction. These are five different perspectives, which are taught through the subject groups and interdisciplinary themes and projects, whole school activities, and the MYP Personal Project in Grade 10. The Areas of Interaction are: Approaches to Learning; Community and Service; Health and Social Education; Environment, and Human Ingenuity.

These frameworks are designed to ensure that students become responsible citizens who:

  • are aware of the range of human achievement
  • are sensitive to other cultures
  • can communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds
  • demonstrate positive ethical attitudes
  • make reasoned decisions
  • think and act critically, creatively and independently to solve complex problems
  • lead a healthy lifestyle

The MYP is an excellent preparation for the Diploma Programme. It is not a prerequisite, but many of the elements and the underlying philosophy of the MYP, are consistent with those found in the Diploma Programme. In Grade 10 students will have their internally assessed work sent to the IBO for monitoring to ensure that learning standards are consistent with IBO requirements.
